Editorial Policy

mmolltomgdl.com is written and maintained by the mmolltomgdl.com Editorial Team. This page explains how we build our converters, where our numbers come from, and how to report a mistake.

How We Calculate Conversions

Every converter uses the molar mass of the substance being measured. To go from mmol/L to mg/dL we multiply by the molar mass (g/mol) and divide by 10, because one litre is ten decilitres. For example, glucose has a molar mass of 180.16 g/mol, so 1 mmol/L = 18.02 mg/dL (the widely used rounded factor is 18).

  • Molar masses are calculated from IUPAC standard atomic weights.
  • Where a test is reported “as” a single element (phosphate as phosphorus, urea nitrogen as BUN), we use that element’s mass, as laboratories do.
  • Where laboratories normally report in µmol/L (creatinine, bilirubin, uric acid, vitamin C), the calculator offers a µmol/L option and warns you if a value looks like it was entered in the wrong unit.
  • Results are shown to four significant figures. Your lab may round differently.

Where Reference Ranges Come From

Normal ranges and targets on our pages are taken from published clinical guidelines and standard laboratory references, such as the American Diabetes Association Standards of Care, the ESC/EAS dyslipidaemia guidelines, the NCEP ATP III report and KDIGO kidney guidelines. The sources used are listed on each page. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, so the range printed on your own report always takes priority.

How Pages Are Checked

  • Each conversion factor is recalculated from the molar mass and compared with published SI conversion tables before a page goes live.
  • The calculator is tested with known values in both directions.
  • Pages show the date the conversion factors were last verified.
  • We are working to add review by a qualified laboratory or clinical professional. Until then, pages are fact-checked by the editorial team against the published sources listed on each page.

What This Site Is Not

Our tools convert units. They do not diagnose conditions or recommend treatment. Always discuss your results with a doctor or other qualified health professional. See our disclaimer.
